WHAT IS ACNE?
Suffering from acne can be such a pain. You want to find a way to make it go away, but where can you start? First let's take a look at what TYPE of acne you may have.
The most common form of Acne is Acne Vulgaris. This ranges from the most mild form of acne, white heads, to the more moderate form, which are called pustules. These can be cured at home with some extra daily and consistent hygienic care. However, there are also severe forms of Acne Vulgaris, which are usually specially treated under the supervision of medical care.
Black Heads-
Black Heads are the wide opening of the skin with bacteria, oil, and debris covering the opening. They usually appear to be a dark brown or black color on the surface of the skin. Black heads are generally the first stages of acne, as they may develop into pimples.
White Heads-
White heads are the commonly used term for comedones. They appear as white bubbles or spots on the surface of your skin. White heads are filled with puss and sebum and are the result when excess oil from the sebaceous glands clogs up the pores or hair follicles on the skin. The sebum gets trapped along with dirt, oil, and bacteria, and as it stays below the skin's surface, white heads start to form.
Papules-
Papules are a little different than white heads. They appear as a reddish or dark pink swelling pigment on the skin. Papules have no heads, and are not too painful. They are not filled with a lot of puss, however scratching or picking may burst the infected area, and can cause the infection to quickly fill with puss. This may result in pain, crusting in the infected area, as well as scarring.
Pustules-
Pustules are pinkish or reddish raised bumps with a white center, which are filled with puss. These are a bit different from white heads since they usually have red rings around the white center. These are the most common type of acne, usually found on the face, shoulders, back, neck, and chest area. Like papules, scratching or popping the infected area, may cause more infection, and will result in scarring.
*Why does the scarring happen?*
Squeezing, picking, or scratching the infected area, will cause the contents of the follicle to rupture into the skin tissue rather than being expressed to the surface of the skin. This will result in tissue damage and scarring.
